Toilet backed up again? Have another slow, clogged drain in the kitchen sink? Water won’t drain in the shower or bathtub? Most homeowners will experience one or more of the above sooner or later - it’s an inevitable occurrence.
There’s nothing more inconvenient than a clogged drain. It can be minor, major or anything in between and it always seems to happen at the worst possible time. So, if this unfortunate circumstance happens in your home, here are a few things you can try before you call in the plumbers.
There are also tools that can be purchased that may aid in resolving some clogs. A standard plunger may resolve a toilet clog or a drain clog by using a pumping motion over the clog to dislodge the stoppage. Keep in mind that the stoppage may be too large or may be too far down for plunging to be effective, but it is always worth a try.
Another useful tool is commonly referred to as a plumbing “snake”. This is a piece of coiled metal that is put through the drain line in an effort to dislodge whatever seems to be causing the blockage. Again, the stoppage may be further into the pipe than the plumbing snake can travel.
Plumbing Grip Sticks
This is an inexpensive tool that is basically a plastic “stick” with teeth. You put this down the drain and the “teeth” will grip whatever is causing the stoppage. While they can be effective on opening a stoppage caused by hair, they are not usually more than a couple of feet long and are not particularly effective on other types of clogs.
