If You're Putting These Items In The Garbage Disposal, Stop NOW!

Sure, your garbage disposal is tough, strong and can handle most food items. But believe it or not, there are lots of common disposables that will give it fits or even cause it to break down. So before you find yourself in a trashy situation, think twice before throwing the following down the disposal:

Mmm… the sweet smell of bacon. A breakfast staple across the United States and let’s face it - who doesn’t love a crispy piece? Well, the grease that it leaves behind doesn’t bode well with your garbage disposal. When hot grease cools, it solidifies down the pipes and causes backups over time. Instead of tossing it down the drain (and no, running hot water doesn’t work) allow it to cool slightly before putting it in a glass jar. Then simply toss it in the trash can! Your disposal will thank you.

Cooking up a healthy meal filled with celery, asparagus or artichokes? Go for it! Just remember that stringy, fibrous foods can easily get tangled in the blades of your disposal causing it to jam up so toss the remnants in the can instead.

Non-Food Items

We probably don’t even need to say it, but a little reminder can’t hurt. Never throw non-food items down the disposal. Some of the common problem-causers include:

  • Rubber bands

  • Twist ties

  • Cigarette butts

  • Sponges

  • Plant clippings

When it comes to your garbage disposal, a little tender loving care goes a long way! And if you find yourself in a jam, don’t hesitate to give The Good Guys at Three Way Plumbing a call. Our experts will get it back up and running in no time!
