Our toilets take enough of a beating as is, they don’t need any surprises from you or your family members. What do we mean by that? We mean that you should only be flushing toilet paper and human waste, not any of the other things you might find in your bathroom. For more details about what should NOT be flushed down the toilet, see below. You might be surprised at a few of the items on the list:
Personal Hygiene Products: this covers everything from cotton swabs to cotton balls, dental floss and the like. Female hygiene products are also a top cause of backed up pipes.
“Flushable” Wipes: even though the package or container says the contents are flushable, they can easily cause a clog. We recommend keeping a small trash can nearby and disposing of them that way instead.
Extra Thick Toilet Paper: while it may be a bit more comfortable, avoid using overly fluffy or thick toilet paper. The thicker it is, the more difficult it will be for it to be flushed completely through your plumbing system.
Medications: there are lots of time when doctors prescribe a few extra pills or predict your symptoms will last a bit longer than they actually do. Well, you should never flush them down the toilet. Not only can they destroy good bacteria, they can contaminate groundwater and have extremely negative effects on local wildlife.
